Where to Enjoy Snowshoeing Near Chicago

Cute couple head out for snowshoeing near Chicago for an adventure in the white forest. The shot is from the rear and from their lower torso to their legs.

Did you know that snowshoeing originated in Central Asia around 4000 B.C.? Today, it’s one of the world’s most popular wintertime activities. Snowshoeing is a great way to enjoy beautiful winter scenery and get a great workout at the same time. If you would like to enjoy snowshoeing near Chicago, visit one of these destinations near Catalyst Apartments where you’ll find scenic trails perfect for an afternoon adventure:

The Morton Arboretum

A local fixture since 1922, The Morton Arboretum features naturally beautiful landscapes no matter the season. The staff teaches visitors how to grow trees at home. The arboretum also truly embraces the snowy season. When there are four or more inches of snow, visitors can snowshoe through the 1,700 grounds. Rentals are available at the Visitors Center.

Red Oak Nature Center

Nestled on the east bank of the Fox River, Red Oak is the region’s premier facility for nature and conservation. Snowshoers find six miles of trails meandering through mature woods. Wildlife is abundant, and you’ll see everything from white-tailed deer to migratory songbirds. Don’t forget to also explore Chicagoland’s only known cave. If you need snowshoes, the Fox Valley Park District rents them for five dollars a person.

Lincoln Marsh Natural Area

Surrounded by prairies, woodlands, and savannas, the Lincoln Marsh is an invaluable resource for enhancing the appreciation of the natural world. It provides a 150-acre respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Several miles of trails run throughout, and a minimum of three inches of snow is required for snowshoeing fun. Rentals are available during the week at the Lincoln Marsh Office and at the Northside Park Shelter House on the weekends.
