Anchored by State Street, Chicago’s Loop has been a shopper’s paradise for more than a hundred years. State Street is known for its vibrant art installations and stores that offer everything from luxury splurges to bargain finds. Here are some of our favorite must-see destinations.
It was in 1996 when the Magnolia Bakery opened in New York City’s West Village neighborhood. The bakery now has locations in ten cities worldwide. It features a vintage decor and warm, inviting atmosphere. People and Time Out Los Angeles have featured many of their treats in their publications. Their red velvet cupcakes, double fudge brownies, and banana pudding are some of their customers’ favorite choices.
Block 37 serves as an important social space and stands at the epicenter of Chicago’s pedestrian revival. It is structured around a five-story atrium and spans an entire city block. Visitors find an eclectic mix of shops as well as restaurants. Highlights include the Banana Republic Factory, The Dearborn, and Simply Thalia.
Macy’s on State Street
Macy’s on State Street is the world’s second oldest department store. It features eight floors full of accessories, clothing, and home goods. The brands range from emerging designers to those who are internationally renowned. The store is also the home of the Glamorama Fashion Show. The building’s architectural details include the green great clocks as well as the three-tiered waterfall Burnham Fountain.
Hungry shoppers can dine in the Walnut Room. It opened in 1907 and was the first restaurant in a department store. The eatery takes everyone back in time as it’s complete with the original Austrian chandeliers and the Circassian walnut paneling. The wait staff is always friendly, and chefs prepare a delicious pot pie that has been on the menu from the beginning.
