Beer is the ultimate comfort drink. Whether you like it light and crisp, or hearty and complex, it washes away the stress of the workweek. And while it’s true that big-name brands will do the trick, the growing craft beer craze speaks to our lust for novelty.
Local microbreweries tinker with hops, grains, fruits, and spices to create groundbreaking sensations. You can’t get them anywhere else—an authentic taste of Chicago, made by your neighbors. Try a growler from one of these breweries near your apartments in Chicago.
On Tour Brewing
On Tour Brewing is a rocking industrial loft, ten minutes west of your Chicago apartments. Established in 2017 by Mark Legenza, their brews represent the fruit of a decade of experimentation. Now you can watch the science in action, as stainless-steel fermenters hum behind the bar.
Try the “Heads All Empty” IPA, and citrus/pine flavor bomb. If IPA isn’t your thing, the “Black Rose” Nitro is silky smooth with roasted toffee notes. All their beers come canned, ranging from 10-oz to “Crowler” (canned Growler) size, designed to share.
On Tour offers both no-contact curbside pickup and delivery. Check their website or call (312) 796-3119 for details.
Ballast Point, Chicago
Ballast Point‘s Chicago location may get its moniker from California, but its heart and soul is that of the folks who brew there. Its new owner is working to restore the brewery’s sense of community within the West Loop. They’re already doing the most important thing right—their beer is delicious.
For something crisp, fans recommend the “Longfin” Helles Lager. It’s fantastic with their blackened grilled fish. For something darker, the “Black Marlin” American Porter is a smooth sip with hints of licorice and crushed cocoa nibs. Pair it with their Santa Maria Ribeye Tacos or barbecued pork.
They welcome growler fills of any size—just make sure to cover any logos before asking them to fill. Call (312) 243-9570 to check availability or to place to-go food orders.
Haymarket Pub & Brewery
The story of Haymarket Pub and Brewery is a beautiful mix of city and country. Named for Haymarket Square, the city home of this brewery is minutes away from our apartments in Chicago.
Owner and master brewer Pete Crowley opened its rural little brother on the other side of Lake Michigan in 2016. Their atmosphere is sleek, chill, and down-to-earth. It’s a refreshing, unprepossessing break from cutting-edge city chic.
Haymarket’s brews represent the flavor beats of the city, tempered with the softness of laid-back country life. One of their best hot-weather beers is the well-balanced Kolsch. New in 2020 is their Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout w/ Raspberries, “Clare’s Thirsty Ale,” creamy and rich with a robust and fruity overtone.
They accept growlers for fills or have kegs and 6-packs available to-go. For pickup of brews or food order online or call (312) 638-0700.
