Now that the weather is getting warmer, it’s the perfect time to enjoy a delicious picnic with family and friends. The best picnic destinations in Chicago include:
Completed in 2016, the Chicago Riverwalk stretches 1.25 miles along the main branch of the Chicago River. It’s a bustling hub of activity and is a favorite picnic destination among locals and visitors alike. You can bring your own delicious meal or order an innovative dish from one of the ten vendors. The best place to spread a blanket is at the west end just before the Lake Street Bridge.
Nestled at the convergence of the Chicago River and canal, River Park is known for its wildlife habitat and excellent fishing. The site opened to the public in 1920 when the River Park District dedicated a new flag pole to area children. In addition to fishing, visitors can also enjoy an afternoon of picnicking, canoeing, and playing soccer. The park is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and it also partners with Chicago Dance Medium to provide ballet and modern dance instruction to all ages.
While within city limits, LaBagh Woods feels worlds away. Bridges and former railroad tracks mix with the colorful wildflowers and towering oaks. The North Branch of the Chicago River is the preserve’s dominant feature, and water-loving mammals can also be spotted along the banks. Picnic tables are found north of Foster Avenue, as are primitive walking trails perfect for watching the birds. Species that may be seen include warblers, tanagers, and sparrows.
