Did you know that while volunteering, you can learn new skills and make new friends while also helping people and animals in need? Here are three great volunteer opportunities in Chicago that you may enjoy:
American Red Cross of Chicago & Northern Illinois
The American Red Cross works to help people across the country and around the world in times of emergency. The organization responds to approximately 1,400 disasters annually. They also teach health, safety, and disaster preparedness skills to more than 100,000 people.
Local volunteers help serve over 9.5 million residents in northern Illinois with efforts including fundraising, maintenance, disaster relief, and much more.
New Leash on Life Chicago
New Leash on Life Chicago is a non-profit organization that finds loving homes for dogs that might otherwise have been euthanized. The shelter is run entirely by volunteers and, since 2005, it has saved over 650 animals. New Leash rescues all breeds, and the dogs are vaccinated and microchipped before adoption.
There are several volunteer opportunities including adoption counseling. These counselors help match potential owners with dogs that are compatible with their lifestyle. They also perform post-adoption services.
Literacy Volunteers of Illinois
Established in 1979, the Literacy Volunteers of Illinois develops and supports programs that help adults and families increase their literacy skills.
Volunteers are needed to help adults learn to read. Tutors and students usually meet once a week for sessions that last between one and three hours. V
